StereoAtypical is an interactive art piece that uses the computer’s camera to detect a face and then pulls out a stereotype from a list at random. The list, which was gathered from a real survey, reflects some common stereotypes that the participants had heard about different ethnic and cultural groups.
Even though the stereotypes come from a real source, the words projected on the screen have no connection with the face detected by the camera. The image/text relationship takes place in our mind, and sometimes can be a reflection of our opinions about others.
Stereotypes, when reinforced by hateful media discourses, keep us from looking beyond group boundaries to acknowledge that people with different roots can coexist, learn from each other and collaborate.
